At Habaraduwa, close but slightly away from the bustle of Galle, we’re really well placed for exploring Sri Lanka’s South Coast. From the Dutch Fort to the surfing highlights of Ahangama, all are within easy reach…

  • Boutiques, restaurants, cafes, historic battlements and churches at Galle Fort

  • Walking tours of lush lowland tea estates

  • National Parks - Udawalawa, Yala, Bundala

  • Bike rides through jungle and paddy fields

  • Whale watching or just cruising in the Indian Ocean and turtles on the beach

(And if you just want to stay put and relax, why not let us arrange expertly guided yoga or spa treatments for you at the villa itself.)

Surfing at Ahangama, Midigama and Weligama

Sri Lanka’s South Coast has become a hotspot for surfers in recent years. Our own beach is more of a body-board sort of spot but Ahangama - with some of the best breaks - is a 15 minute drive and Weligama (ideal for beginners) just slightly further.

Teachers and gear are readily available.

Jungle and paddy bike rides

We’re a very short Tuk Tuk ride from the hopping off point for wonderfully led bike rides that take you through lush paddy fields, jungle and inland villages. If you’re a big enough group the team at Idle Bikes may even plot a route to start and finish at the villa.

Turtles

Early morning on the beach you can expect to see turtles laying their eggs. The Sea Turtle Farm & Hatchery, protecting these eggs, is just a stroll down the beach in Habaraduwa where you can release baby turtles into the ocean.

Leopard, elephants, crocodiles and birds

It makes for a full-day trip but Yala National Park is within reach and is the go-to destination for leopard in Sri Lanka. Udawalawa National Park is best known for elephant herds and Bundala National Park is a dream for bird-watchers; a famed wintering ground for migratory water birds.

Tea estate and factory tour

While most of the Sri Lankan crop is grown in the Hill Country, the lowlands are famed for their rich, flavoursome teas. From Samudra you can make a visit to the factory and estate at Handunugoda to see and learn about the process from first planting to final product.

Day or sunset cruises

Sail Lanka has a small fleet of catamarans and offers fantastic day or sunset cruises. They leave from Mirissa which is a short drive (about 20 minutes) from us at Samudra.
